The wintering of the participants of the First Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition was started 17 November 1995. For realization of this event important for Ukraine a lot of people applied considerable efforts, energy and initiative.
In 1992 Russia declared oneself by legal successor of all antarctic stations of Soviet Union and refused Ukraine in transmission of one of them. In January 1992 Yu. B. Oscret treats with creation idea of ukrainian antarctic station to President of Ukraine, into scientific and governmental establishments, activity of which contributed to appearance 3 July 1992 Ukraine President Decree about Ukraine participation in Antarctic researches. In August 1992 Ukraine Parliament adopts documents about tacking of Ukraine to Antarctic Treaty. 26 October 1993 formation of Centre of Antarctic researches (afterwards Ukrainian Antarctic Centre) attached to Ukraine Academy of Sciences with director P.F. Gozhik and deputy director Yu. B. Oscret. |

In November 1993 Great Britain spread among embassies a suggestion about Faraday Station transmission to one of "unantarctic" states. In March-April 1994 Yu. B. Oscret and А. Cheburkin drive in Cambridge for acquaintance with work of British Antarctic Service. Cheburkin first comes forward on Faraday. In August 1994 BAS was confirmed in intention to hand down Station Faraday to Ukraine, offering to detach 4 specialists for detailed study of station guaranteeing systems, scientific work and apparatus, diesel economy and communication networks. August-September 1994: Ukraine enters in SCAR during 23th sessions of this international organization. |

21 November 1994: a fund "Vidrodzhennia" picks out 12000 dollars for project "Ukraine goes back into Antarctica". 5 december 1994: take-off Yu. B. Oscret (guaranteeing of station), G.P. Milinevsky (scientific programs), О. Lushnivsky (tie) and В.Georgiev (diesel economy) to Faraday. 17 December 1994 - 15 February 1995: work on station. 20 July 1995: in London Ukraine Ambassador Komissarenko puts name to intergovernmental agreement, and director of Ukrainian Antarctic Centre P.F.Gozhik puts name to Memorandum between UAC and BAS about transmission of Antarctic Station Faraday to Ukraine not later 31 March 1996. |

August-September 1995 is a selection and winterers command preparation for the First Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition. 28 November 1995 and 7 February 1996 two winterers groups arrived on Faraday and full command from 12 persons begins work. 6 february 1996 took place a station transfer and Ukraine stood by antarctic state. Ended 2-year period of negotiations, concordance, meetings and trips. British flag was lowered at Faraday Station and Ukrainian one was hoisted on Akademik Vernadsky Station. |

A Station bears a name remarkable Ukrainian academician V.I. Vernadsky (1863-1945). In 1918 he became the first president of Ukraine Academy of Sciences. In the same year he founded scientific library, which is now well known Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine - the the most collection of literature in Ukraine from all fields of knowledge. V.I. Vernadsky was famous for geologist, inquired into chemical storage of earthly cortex, created a theory of isomorphism. He founded the teachings about biosphere and noosphere. |

The scientific base on Argentine Islands was founded under time of British expedition on Graham Land 1934-1937. As permanently operating the meteorological observatory, the base started work on Island Winter from 1947. During wintering 1953-1954 the station was rebuilt on Marine Cape on Galindez Island. |

After 1953 a few buildings were erected here in addition, and majority of buildings was built in 1979-1980. All buildings complex set on stone Galindez Island base. 24 persons can work up under expeditions changing time on station, and a winter staff composes 12 persons.
The buildings on station territory are included: two huts built from nonmagnetic material in which magnetometers are installed, aerological pavilion (it is used also to garage for four snow-tractors), VLF-laboratory, old building for generator, where two refrigerators set and a joiner's workshop is placed, building of emergency base, that adapted under storage for aerials and emergency supplies of products. In 1984 a small lodge of emergency base was built on peninsula at 9 km from station - Rasmussen Hut. As electric power sources three diesel generators Broadcrown/Volvo-Penta, by power 100 kWt of each are used at the station. |
