Today NASC is the State operator of Ukraine in Antarctica. The NASC personnel together with scientists of Institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU), the most authoritative higher educational establishments, domestic and foreign science centers became the leader in studying of Ice Continent and South Ocean. It also takes an active part in special meetings and conferences of the international Antarctic community, creates databases of weather monitoring, an ozonosphere, organizes geophysical, geological, seismological, biospheric, medicophysiological, oceanologic and other investigations at Vernadsky Station, surrounding islands and marine polygons. NASC also makes efforts for minimization of anthropogenic influence on the Antarctic nature and constantly cares of environment protection.

Negotiations with BAS representatives

Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and NASC have established business contacts with researchers of Antarctica from Argentina, Bulgaria, Spain, Israel, China, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, the USA, Czech Republic, Chile, Japan and other states. It facilitated the exchange of specialists-winterers and scientists, development of research programs, logistical operations. Cooperation of NASC with WMO, ISGI, CCAMLR, СOMNAP, SCAR and other international organizations gets an increasing dynamics.

For the last years NASC has prepared a lot of young scientists, which have defended 5 theses for a Doctor of Science degree; published interesting monographs on geophysics, oceanography, biology; have organized 3 international conferences on the Antarctic investigations. Ukrainian scientists perform 16 scientific projects within the framework of ІІІ IPY. Organization of ATCM ХХХІ in the capital of Ukraine became NASC’s primary task.

Alongside with scientific activity NASC leads an active educational work, familiarizing schoolboys, students, the wide public with influence of atmospheric processes in polar regions of the Earth on the general condition of the environment, nature protection efforts of scientists on conservation of planet resources and unique forms of life. Cooperation with mass media, publishing of the «Ukrainian Antarctic journal», the popular scientific journal «Expedition-XXI», organization of photo-exhibitions, meetings with polar explorers, viewing of video films promotes this.

NASC major tasks are the development of a long-term plan of investigations of Ukraine in Antarctica up to 2010, and also construction of optimum mutual relations between customers and consumers of scientific and technical production in the country and behind its borders.
